The thing about cosplay and weight.

Recently I hear from a lot people that they want to lose weight. Some of them because of Cosplay, some of them just because they want to.
Cosplay and weight has always been a highly sensitive issue. People get laughed at because they are "too fat". People get bitched at because they are too thin. It's rare to find a cosplayer who likes him- or herself.
That's sad, even though I can totally understand it. And there was I time, when I stepped on my scales and thought: No. That's enough. Not anymore.

Here's what helped me. To lose weight to a point that I'm almost comfortable with (damn three kilos ;D). This can work for you, or not. It's not something weired that forbids you too much. And this was very important for me. I'm a chocolate addict. I get annoyed when I can't have my chocolate. I feel bad when I can't eat something sweet after dinner. I didn't want to feel bad. Like I could never do a low-carb and whatsoever even more complecated diet.

Basicly, what makes you lose weight, is when the body needs more than it gets. It's so easy. And so acutally what I did is - tadaaaaa - counting calories. I figured out that I needed to eat around 1500 calories a day to eat less calories than before. If you want to try it, this number depends on how much you eat normally of course.
Now this sounds very familiar: actually Weight Watchers does the same! They  "group" the calories in their points-system.
To make things easier, and not to need to count every little bit, I figured out the stuff I eat about everyday. In these days this used to be cereals in the morning, some slices of bread, a normal meal with my boyfriend. I drank a lot apple juice with sparkling water back then (Apfelschorle) because I felt sick of only drinking water (don't ask. I'm weired with drinks).

First thing was drinks. Any drink that contains sugar is really bad, so you should stick to water or tea. Softdrinks are REALLY bad, unless you choose the diet-version (and they're still bad for your teeth =P).
I personaly tried to reduce the amount of apple juice bit by bit, and in the end I now drink mineral water every day.
With drinks you can gain a lot weight because of the calories. Apfelschorle has around 30 calories per 100ml, which means 300 calories for a litre! That's a whole meal if you drink up to two litres a day.

Then there was my breakfast. I used to eat oat flakes with milk and cocoa, a very common thing in germany. Oat flakes do not look like it, but they've got a lot calories as well. I was allowed 100g with the fitting amount of milk and cocoa. To make it easier for myself to measure, I searched for an old honey-glass where 100g perfectly fit in, so I didn't have to weigh it every time.
Start with at least something for breakfast anyway, because it wakes the body's metabolism for the day (Nowadays I drink a glass of cocoa because I noticed I stay hungry until 1pm anyway XD less calories that way lol)

I personally need to eat until I'm full, else I will get grumpy and unsatisfied. So i decided to eat my bread around 1pm, and with my list, I was allowed to eat 4 slices - and choose the topping myself. Yes, even Salami, which is a fat topping. Of course not in heaps. Common sense here. Along with with this I'd eat an apple or tomatos. For me it was very important to eat apples before eating the bread, because apples make me hungry.
And it was important that the last bread had something sweet as a topping, because after eating, I get  a ravenous appetite for something sweet. I can totally recommend "Apfelkraut" (apple syrup, though I'm not sure if syrup is actually the same as I mean) here, as it is surprisingly low on calories.
Of course, If you can deal better with eating little stuff over the day, nothing stops you, as long as you're within the amount of calories.

In the evenings, I did eat a cooked meal with my bf. Yes. The "big" meal in the evening. It still worked. We didn't even pay too much attention to the amount of fat in them. Again, use common sense here. Not a MacDonalds Meal every day, not a bucket of KFC. A normal one would be something like pasta with tomato, around 125g is a normal portion and it worked well. Usually, when you cook yourself, it's not THAT hard to keep within 6-700 calories per meal. Just do this and don't eat too much fast- or frozen food.

All this is not very little food I think, and I'm still not done yet. I was also allowed to eat a yogurt every day, as well as a piece of chocolate, I usually ate this in the evening as a dessert. For this we bought stuff like celebrations (mars, milkyway and stuff, in very small pieces). Or really expensive dark chocolate, because I can discipline myself if I know it's expensive. And dark chocolate does not make you wish for more and more, like milk-chocolate.

My diet in short:
  • Breakfast with oatflakes and cocoa (approx. 100g)
  • 4 slices of bread
  • 1 yogurt
  • 1 normal meal
  • 1 piece of chocolate
  •  as much fruit as I want (apart from bananas and grapes)
Not too bad I think. At weekends I allowed myself cake and icecream. Not in heaps and the whole day (common sense). Toast with Nutella. That stuff.
This is important. Because else I wouldn't have been happy if I had forbidden myself all the good stuff. I mean, how can you be?

I lost 13kg like that (it took me round 5 months I think), and after 5 years, I'm still on the weight I got after this. Last year, when I gained three kilos after christmas, I did the same thing and lost one kilo additionally that I didn't get back until now.

Some advice on the way:
  • Do not start before christmas or easter. If you're living in a first world country, you're bound to have to eat a lot.
  • Do not start in a time you mentally feel ill, because your work sucks, you've got a bad relationship, whatever. You will properbly not have the nerve, and that's ok.
  • reward yourself. I rewarded myself somewhere in between, and at the weight I wanted to get - I bought a pair of pants. Two sizes smaller than I was used to. Hell, that was an awesome feeling!
  • Don't push yourself! Losing weight takes it's time. The first kilos will go rather quickly, but after about 5 it took a little longer in my case.
  • The first week will require a lot of discipline because you're constantly hungry. This will vanish once your stomach gets used to smaller portions.
  • Maybe do not start out with the thought of losing 40 kilos, but only 10, 15 in the beginning. It's good. It's less.

The thing about sports

I lost all this weight without doing any kind of sports as I didn't have time to excercise by then. So this is possible.
But remember: excercising on a regular basis is healthy! It's good for your body and your soul!
However, if you start dieting and doing a lot sports from the beginning, it can actually be that you gain weight instead of losing it. Because you build up muscles, without losing your fat instantly. Think of this fact before getting desperate!

Non-eating and still not getting thinner

This also happens. If you're someone who eats very little, your body may go into "standby mode". I know some people like that. They don't move very much anymore, and they're always tired, and then sometimes they like to eat snacks in the evening. This means they do not burn very many calories, even though they don't eat much. This is why you should have breakfast, to get your metabolism to work.

Please note:
I'm not an expert about that stuff. If you tried and tried and tried, and never got a good result, consult a food expert. This is what worked for me, and I still like that way. Because I can have some chocolate. Because I don't have to stop eating. Not even to special times or special stuff. There was a point where I stopped losing weight, and where I maybe would have had to reduce the number of calories a little more. But with this weight I like myself a lot more.

Animagic 2012

Journey Cosplayer *__*
Animagic ended on sunday, and I had a really great con!
At Friday it was really hot. I wore Umi again, but noticed that the coins on my belt are sharp and cut through the thread during Japan Expo. So I lost a few Coins >.<. Still I didn't get good pictures =( Have to do a shoot soon! I got to a point where I really want some good pictures to start with.
In the evening a thunderstorm broke out, so we fled about half an hour earlier than we wanted to, but it didn't matter. We always meet in a chinese restaurant on friday <3

epic car-park shoot >.<
Saturday was very rainy in the beginning, and all my friends blamed it on me as I wore Amewarashi from xxxholic. Within half an hour I my umbrella was really wet, and my clothes were as well. Since the costume is kind of heavy to begin with, I changed after about 2h and a lovely car-park-shooting where I was the photographer (>______<) into normal clothes. It instantly stopped to rain ^^"
After that, the weather was a little cloudy, but in the evening the sun even showed itself. After leaving the con around eight o clock, and some pictures later (without costume it's so much easier to take some pictures!), we all went to my place to eat Okonomiyaki. Spending time with friends is wonderfull!
Very late E-Chan and I discussed our WCS skit - if we make it into preselection.

I've got really pretty friends^^
On Sunday the weather was PERFECT! It wasn't too cold, the wind was blowing gently and the sun showed up now and then. I was wearing an original creation, an earth-sprite (I looked like a hippie lol), because I originally had a group. I didn't find them though >.<. Was a great day nevertheless. Took some photos with my friends, chatted with others, got a cute "good-luck-in-london" card from the Belgians and watched DCM preselection (German Cosplay Championship). DCM wasn't THAT good. First of all, there's the recurring fact that DCM judges the construction and accuracy heavily. This leads to rather simple costumes, which is sad (on the other hand it's the only competition I know that has very transparent rules). And then the skits mostly were pretty boring. There was really funny Dragon Ball skit though, and I'm glad they qualified for the finals!
In the afternoon, my friends from far away made their way home, that's always so sad =( I wish we could live closer together =(

To sum it up: Animagic was wonderful!

Eurocosplay Progress - Bustle

Now, I try to keep everone updated with my EC process. It's nice to see that the other contestants are fairly open with their costume choices as well. In Germany it's always a biiiiig secret.

So here's my progress (you can guess what it will be, but it will be obvious in a few posts ;D)

This is my base pattern (+ a backpart of a skirt). It has three darts in a total (the one in the back isnt' good to see).

After cutting and sewing the fabric, I applied bias tape for the boining. The lowest bone goes with the hem.

There is also a little piece of bias tape in each corner of the left side....

.. as well as in the upper middle. Later on a bone will be put in them in a diagonal direction to the others, so that it becomes more stable.

Here's the backpart of the skirt. As it is smaller than the rest, it'll keep the boning rounded and leans against my back.

Time to put the boning in and sew the backpart to the actual bustle part...

Since the bustle part is still a little too wide, I ruffled it, and then put the waistband over it.

Finished bustle^^

Japan Expo

Two weeks until Japen Expo in Paris! I'm all excited because it's my first foreign Con, I'll meet people of EC and cosplay with dear friends.

For saturday I'll bring Yuuko (Cover vol. 3). This is already finished, I just have to work a little on the shoulder straps as they suck atm.

For sunday or friday I decided to bring Umi in her chizeta dress from Magic Knight Rayearth. This one is new but almost finished. Here are some progress shots:

I do bellydance myself, so I really wanted a bellydance costume for once. And one without harempants. Mangaka tend to think bellydancers wear them, but most actually don't.
Sadly the costume isn't very accurate compared to real bellydance costumes, so I take some freedom in decorating it with sequins. Me loves glitter!

Btw, shooting Tira today. FINALLY.

Eurocosplay prelims at Dokomi

So, to keep you up and going, a small report of the EC prelims at Dokomi. Actually this is not about boasting how cool I am, and I know that EC is not of interest such as WCS. But I think EC as well as ECG is a cool idea, and people don't really know what's going on (at least in Germany - I was like: ok, I'm going to participate. What now?).

The prelims were held on Saturday. In the morning there was a costume/construction judging and it was a little chaotic as the con moved to different location this year. Nobody really knew where the judging was to take place.
At least we were 7 contestants, which was more than last year. I remember there were only two, and some Conhelpers ran around to find more.
However, all others contestants were really nice! The costume quality was on an ok-level as well. Not as big as WCS costumes, but I think this was natural considering how little attention the contest gets.

I wore Tira - Pictures to come when I did a proper shooting.

The stage show with the skits took place in early afternoon, but I didn't have much time in between. Looking for the room in the morning took some time.
Sadly we weren't able to watch each other, but the reactions of the audience reached us behind the stage and told more or less that most of the performances must have been quite entertaining.
I did a hula hoop skit and was very afraid that I'd either break my nose (which I almost did two days before XD) or throw my hoop into the audience by accident. Neither happend, gladly. Still, I'm not satisfied, but well.
I heard that some people asked why I didn't hoop with my ringblade, and that they were disappointed about that.
Intentionally I actually wanted to do this, but:
- The blade is too heavy and there was no chance for me to construct it to be lighter
- It breaks too easy (learned that the hard way when trying to hoop with it) because I wanted it somewhat light
- Hooping with tricks needs a lot of hand action. One has to grip around the hoop often and that's simply not possible with the blades. Only in three places, which is not enough.

Again, there wasn't very much time in between show and the award ceremony - I was of course really happy to get chosen! I love London and I'm excited to see a foreign con. Now it's a hard time to choose the costume for the finals. EC Cosplays are usually really big, and I'm not a great armor-maker. I narrowed my list, but I'll let you know when I finally chose a costume^^

There's another prelim for the second german contestant in the beginning of July. I'm really excited who will be the other part of "Team Germany" (Yes, I consider us a team, even though we're doing solo cosplays).

Still there

Yep, I did NOT forget about this blog. There's still a part of Tira's Ringblade left here, but until this weekend I was really busy (I still am but a big Con is over now). Private life comes first, businesslife second and cosplay has to share the third place with dancing.
There's still tons of photos to work on from a wedding, a bandshoot and a private shooting.

However, Dokomi Convention is over, Tira is finished! I'll post pictures after I did a shooting and I'll continue the ringblade tutorial. At saturday I participated in the Eurocosplay competition and actually won. So I'll be one of the two german cosplayers in the London finals!
I'll post progress of my costume, and thoughts about it here as well. Really can't decide on a costume yet >.<

Tira Ringblade III

It's nearly finished! So it'll be a four-part blog for my Azi Dahaka =)

Next step, I fixed the isolation foam to the hoop. With screws. So simple. I thought that would break, but in fact, it stays on really well.

After that, I smeard the gap between hoop and foam with hot glue. Works well.

Blades are in place now. The whole thing got covered in paper clay (4 packs of flour-like paperclay). Then, it needs a whole lot of sanding, which was extremly annoying on those big areas, and broke a lot on the outer bevels. I'm not completely satisfied here.

After paperclay and sanding, they got covered in gesso so that they are all white.

Now, all blades are spraypainted in silver. They look a little like inverted klingon Bathlets now >.<

Before adding the ornaments, I shaded the blades a little with acrylic paint.

For the copper looking pieces, I decided to cover them in a similar looking fake suede. I thought of places in the sword that would be more comfortable to touch for Tira.
The ornaments are made of craftfoam, and I used the same method as in my Fran Helmet. They were painted golden later - which will be in my next post =)
